Don't Let the Warm Glow of Holiday Lights Spark a Disaster in Your Home
Posted 18 December 2009
Forty-eight percent of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems, with many (36%) occurring in the 10 days between December 24th and January 2nd.  As this critical time approaches, make sure the holiday lights you’ve strung with joy aren’t a fire hazard.  When looking at holiday fires across the country, in the case of decorative light fires, Christmas trees were the item first ignited 21% of the time.  But a holiday light fire can start anywhere, so make sure your holiday lights-inside or out-are properly hung and lit.

To prevent your holiday lights from turning into a flaming disaster, consider following these safety tips:

    * Make sure you use lights that are appropriate for their locations-indoor vs. outdoor lights.
    * Do not use extension cords or outlet adapters.
    * Connect no more than 3 strands of mini-light sets and no more than 50 bulbs for larger, screw-in light bulbs.
    * Replace any sting of lights that has worn cords or loose bulb connections.
    * Always turn off holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.
    * Use clips, not nails, to hang light strings so electrical cords aren’t damaged.
    * Holiday lights are designed and made for temporary use.  If you’ve used them for several seasons, consider purchasing new sets.
    * When your natural tree begins to drop needles, dispose of it.  This will decrease the chance of your dried out tree igniting with hot lights or a light string that malfunctions or sparks.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holidays and forget safety.  Take time now to check your holiday lights and take a few small precautions.  It could not only save your holiday, but your life,” said State Fire Marshal Jim Kenkel.
