Iowa
in
for Snow Globe Effect
Posted 7 January
2010
Imagine a miniaturized winter scene of the Iowa landscape. Add 4 to 8
inches of the airy, sparkling snow flakes that have been falling today.
Finally, shake it all up Thursday by bringing in the northwest winds
gusting at 35 to 45 mph. What do you have? The great Iowa snow globe.
And what will it be like to travel when Iowa experiences the snow globe
effect? The Iowa Department of Transportation is warning travelers that
they can expect significant blowing and drifting of snow, reduced
visibilities, dangerous wind chills of 25 to 35 below zero, near
blizzard to whiteout conditions in rural areas, and rural roadways may
become impassable.
Travelers in parts of western Iowa where significant ice remains on
power lines and trees should stay alert for possible downed trees,
power lines and power poles on the roadways. This includes portions of
Audubon, Sac, Crawford, Carroll, Mills, Cass, and Fremont counties.
As a reminder, a National Weather Service winter storm warning remains
in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. If you must travel during the
high-wind period, make sure you have your winter survival kit and a
cell phone with you. If stranded, remain with your vehicle. |
