IDPH Releases Funding to Combat HIV and Hepatitis C
Posted 3 February 2010
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has released $682,000 in funding for HIV and hepatitis prevention services across the state. According to IDPH, 123 Iowans were diagnosed with HIV in 2009. As many as 53,000 Iowans are infected with hepatitis C, but fewer than 20 percent have been diagnosed.

“Clearly, the need for primary prevention programs in Iowa is great,” said IDPH HIV, STD, and Hepatitis Bureau Chief Randy Mayer. “We are pleased with the range of programs offered and populations served by agencies across Iowa.” Some of the funding will be used by 16 agencies to conduct counseling, testing and referral services at no cost to individuals at risk for HIV and hepatitis C. The prevention programs will be conducted in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, Mason City, Sioux City and Waterloo.

In addition, nine agencies, including the Department of Corrections, were funded to provide individual, group, and community-level programs to help people change risky behaviors. The programs have been demonstrated to be effective and are approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year, funds are also being directed at programs for two disproportionately impacted minority populations - African American/black persons and Hispanic/Latino(a) persons. African Americans are diagnosed with HIV at a rate that is 10 times that of white, non-Hispanic persons, and Hispanic persons are diagnosed with HIV at a rate that is four times that of white, non-Hispanic persons in Iowa.
