celebrates
Black History Month

The University of Northern Iowa Center for Multicultural Education
(CME) will offer a variety of events throughout February in honor of
Black History Month.
A presentation led by Abraham Funchess, director for the Iowa
Commission on the Status of African-Americans, will be held at 3:30
p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, in the CME. Funchess will discuss the needs
and concerns of Iowa's African-American citizens.
In addition to Funchess's presentation, a panel discussion on HIV/AIDS
awareness at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8, in the Maucker Union's Elm Room
will include Marcia Sisk, Youth of Color Coalition chair and "Together
for Youth "SiHLE program facilitator, and Janelle Ballhagen and
Elizabeth Wilson of "Together for Youth/Allen Women's Health."
UNI student Umaru Balde will describe his journey from child slavery to
his pursuit of a college education in Iowa at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15,
in the CME.
African-American Jeopardy, where students will be quizzed over
African-American culture and history, will be held at 8 p.m., Monday,
Feb. 22, at the CME. Community members and students are invited to
compete. Study guides will be available at the CME a week before
competition.
