Got
a
Home and Family Question? Ask ISU Extension's Answer Line
Posted 19 February
2010
Liz Meimann, the new coordinator of Iowa State University Extension’s
Answer Line, knows that just about any question is fair game for the
toll-free hotline and online database of answers to home and family
questions.
Answer Line’s professional consumer and family scientists can explain
everything from how to deal with a child who is afraid of the dark to
the proper use of plastics in the microwave.
“We are a unique program, because when you call, you will speak to a
real person, not a recording, and get research-based answers,” Meimann
said. “You can call or e-mail Answer Line when you want to know how to
get stains out of clothes or whether that food in the back of the
refrigerator is safe to eat. Our answers reflect your particular
situation, not just the result of frequently asked questions.”
In the past year Answer Line answered more than 19,800 consumer calls
at (800) 262-3804. Nearly 120,000 visitors found answers online; a
database of Answer Line frequently asked questions and answers is
available anytime on the ISU Extension Web site, www.extension.iastate.edu/answerline/.
Answer
Line also answered e-mail questions.
About 69 percent of Answer Line’s questions deal with nutrition, food
preparation, food safety and food preservation, topics in which Meimann
is particularly well versed. She has a bachelor’s degree in food
science from Iowa State and currently is working on her master’s degree
in the subject, also at ISU.
Meimann signed on as Answer Line’s coordinator Feb. 1. Previously, she
answered consumer questions for Answer Line from January 2007 to
December 2008, before beginning work on her graduate degree. She and
her husband farm and also own and operate a small mobile concession
stand.
In addition to food-related questions, Answer Line answers questions
about child development, consumer management, home environment,
household equipment, textiles and laundry, Meimann said.
Answer Line also is part of a national Healthy Homes initiative for
Extension, and will answer consumers’ indoor air quality questions
dealing with mold, radon, asbestos and general cleaning.
The Web site’s frequently asked questions allow Iowans access to
information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Consumers can search by
keyword, browse the keyword index or select a topic area to find
answers to their questions.
Calls are answered Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to
4 p.m. A Relay Iowa line (phone linkage for deaf and hard-of-hearing
individuals) is available at 711. The toll-free hotline also is
available in Minnesota at (800) 854-1678. In addition, questions
can be sent by e-mail to answer@iastate.edu.
